The key limitation is material compatibility. Polyurethane boat sealants should never be used on polycarbonate (Lexan), ABS plastic, acrylic, or PVC. What Is Polysulfide Marine Sealant?

Polysulfide marine sealant is a synthetic rubber compound that remains permanently flexible after curing. Unlike polyurethane, which cures to a firm eraser-like consistency, polysulfide stays soft and rubber-like indefinitely. This makes it the superior choice for applications that experience repeated movement, cleaning exposure, or chemical contact.

Polysulfide boat sealants resist UV light, fuel, diesel, oil, and aggressive deck cleaning products without breaking down. They can be used above and below the waterline, are sandable and paintable, and have a proven bond life of 20 or more years. The primary drawback is a longer cure time. Full cure takes 10 to 20 days depending on temperature and humidity. Plan haulouts accordingly.

Like polyurethane, polysulfide marine sealants are not compatible with ABS, Lexan, acrylic, or PVC plastics.

What Is Silicone Marine Sealant?

Marine silicone sealant is fundamentally different from polyurethane and polysulfide. It is a sealant only, not an adhesive. It has very low adhesive strength and depends entirely on mechanical compression to maintain its position. Its value lies in two specific properties: it is the only common marine sealant that is safe on plastics, and it remains fully flexible and UV resistant indefinitely.

Marine silicone sealant is the correct choice for bedding plastic portlight lenses (Lexan or acrylic), plastic hatch frames, above-waterline interior applications, and navigation light fixtures that need easy future removal.

The critical warning with any marine silicone sealant is paintability. Silicone cannot be painted. More importantly, it leaves a residue on surrounding surfaces that prevents paint from adhering for years. If silicone contamination reaches a fiberglass or composite surface, nothing will bond to it again, not even fresh silicone. Never use marine silicone near any area that may need future painting, bonding, or re-bedding.

Marine silicone sealant is also not recommended below the waterline. It is not rated for continuous water submersion.

What Is SMP or Hybrid Marine Sealant?

Silane-Modified Polymer (SMP) is a hybrid chemistry that combines UV resistance from silicone with the adhesion and paintability of polyurethane. SMP marine sealants do not yellow under UV exposure, are paintable, removable, and compatible with plastics that pure polyurethane cannot touch. Cure times are similar to fast-cure polyurethane.

What Is the Difference Between 3M 5200, 4200, and 4000UV?

The 3M marine sealant product line is the most widely used in recreational boating, and choosing between these three products causes more confusion than any other marine sealant decision. The entire choice comes down to one question: do you ever need to take this apart again?

  • 3M Sealant 5200 is a permanent structural marine adhesive sealant. It cures to 700 psi tensile strength, which is high enough that removal without damaging the surrounding gelcoat or laminate is extremely difficult. The full cure version takes 5 to 7 days. A fast cure version is also available with 24-hour handling time. The warning that matters: if there is any chance the fitting will ever need service or replacement, do not use 3M 5200. Removal means cutting, grinding, and using a dedicated sealant remover. Budget hours, not minutes.
  • 3M Fast Cure 4200 is the standard marine adhesive sealant for deck hardware, cleats, railings, serviceable through-hulls, and any fitting that may need removal during the life of the boat. At 300 to 500 psi, it is still significantly stronger than polysulfide or silicone, but can be removed with mechanical effort and a putty knife. Handling time is approximately 24 hours with full cure at 72 hours. Available in black and white. Like 5200, 4200 yellows under UV over time.

How Do You Remove Old or Cured Marine Sealant?

Removing cured marine sealant correctly protects the underlying surface and prepares it for a clean new application.

For standard polyurethane and polysulfide marine sealants, start by scoring the edge of the old bead with a razor blade. This breaks the surface adhesion and allows a putty knife or plastic scraper to peel the bulk of the marine sealant away from the substrate. Work slowly to avoid gouging the gelcoat.

For cured 3M Sealant 5200 and other high-strength polyurethane marine adhesive sealant, mechanical removal alone is rarely enough. DeBond Marine Formula is a dedicated solvent that softens cured polyurethane marine sealants to allow clean removal from fiberglass, wood, and metal without damaging the substrate. Score the bond line first, apply DeBond, allow penetration time, then scrape. This is significantly safer than heat gun removal for gelcoat surfaces.

A heat gun can be used on polyurethane marine sealant to soften the material for scraping, but requires proper ventilation. Heated polyurethane generates fumes that should not be inhaled.
