I am a right below knee amputee. I have been looking for a short wall mountable handle to assist with getting down to and getting up from my toilet for a very long time. I have been keeping an old short walker in the shower stall that I use to help me with this. Every once in a while, I Google "Short Wall Mounted Handle" and look to see if there is anything that will work. There is a short wall that I want to mount a handle to that will allow me to get rid of the walker. Everything is either too large or not strong enough to support me. I don't know how I came cross pictures of sailboat mast steps but a few weeks ago I did... it was a light-bulb moment to say the least! Then I began looking for one that would work for my "handle". I came across the Lunar Marine Anodized Aluminum Folding Mast Step and I couldn't believe it!! Not only would it work perfectly, it folds up and doesn't stick out to catch anything while entering the shower... it is absolutely perfect!!
I used #14 Flat Head SS 3" screws to mount it after I carefully drilled the tile and duro-rock backer board. The wall frame is solid 2X4 and will support a huge load. I used high quality sealant to keep all the water out and I can't tell you how well it works as a folding handle!!
Sometimes thinking out of the box is the solution. I would have never known about mast steps if they didn't somehow pop-up while searching for a handle.
This is a very, very sturdy and secure "handle" to say the least. I couldn't be happier to have found something that would work so well and the fact it folds is just icing on the cake!!
My friends look at it and are amazed that it works so well for what I use it for. As it is made to mount on a sailboat mast, I don't think corrosion is ever going to be a problem at all.
I could not be happier with this find!
